Mobile Communications - Hitachi, Renesas Slash Handset Power Consumption
December 16, 2004
Hitachi and Renesas recently announced that they have developed a system chip that dramatically reduces handset power consumption during standby by 90%. By adopting this technology, mobile phones will have a battery life that extends to approximately 30 days with a single charge.

The two Japanese companies will officially debut the technology at the IEDM (International Electron Devices Meeting), which opens in San Francisco on December 20th.

Handsets adopting this system chip are slated to enter production in 2007.

The technological breakthrough is made possible as the companies successfully reduced the linewidth of CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) transistor circuits and trimmed the insulating film from 100 nanometers to 10 nanometers in thickness.

The technology also enables mobile phones to process data 20% faster than the current speed, which greatly improves the quality of multimedia applications on handsets.
